The Emotional Impact of Biophilic Design

There’s something I’ve noticed over the years while working in homes across DFW.

Many people already know their design style. They’ve chosen beautiful furniture, calming colors, and meaningful pieces for their space, but something still feels missing. Sometimes a home can still feel cold, uninspired, or disconnected even when it’s beautifully designed.

There’s a layer missing.
There’s life missing.

I think what many people are truly craving from their homes right now is comfort. We live in a world filled with constant stimulation, stress, noise, and pressure. Home should be the place where we feel the most grounded. It should be the place where we can exhale, recharge, feel safe, and feel inspired again.

That’s one of the reasons I care so deeply about intentional plant design.

My Personal Connection to Plants and Spaces

I realized plants could emotionally transform a space during one of the darkest seasons of my life. I was grieving, healing, and trying to reconnect with myself. During that time, plants brought a sense of peace and grounding into my home that I desperately needed.

I dove in head first. I wanted to learn everything I could about plants, design, care, and how living things could completely shift the feeling of a room.

Before I ever transformed other people’s homes, I transformed my own. I had hundreds of plants before Lauren and Plants even existed.

Plants gave my space character, warmth, and beauty. More than that, they made me feel calm and inspired. Even now, I cannot imagine a home without them.

When intentional plant design is added into a space, there’s an energy shift. The room softens. It feels grounded and alive. It’s almost like you can fully breathe again.

What Is Biophilic Design?

Biophilic design is the practice of bringing natural elements into interior spaces. In simple terms, it’s bringing the outside in.

To me, biophilic design is not about trends or flashy aesthetics. It’s about creating spaces that feel intentional, calming, and connected to nature. Plants, natural textures, organic movement, and thoughtful design choices all work together to create an environment that supports well-being.

Humans are naturally drawn to nature. We are meant to feel connected to living things. That connection has a powerful impact on how we experience our homes emotionally and mentally.

Plants and Mental Health

The world outside our homes can feel overwhelming. There’s constant stress, stimulation, and noise. Plants bring a grounded energy into a space that can help soften all of that.

There is real scientific evidence that plants can help reduce stress and improve overall well-being, but beyond the science, I’ve witnessed the emotional impact firsthand through my clients and in my own life.

Plants can bring:

  • calmness

  • comfort

  • inspiration

  • mindfulness

  • routine

  • joy

  • emotional grounding

But I believe the intentionality behind the design is where the real magic happens.

You can place random plants around a room, but that does not automatically create harmony. Intentional plant design considers the energy of the space, the lifestyle of the client, the lighting, the flow of the room, and the long-term health of the plants themselves.

When everything works together thoughtfully, the entire feeling of the home changes.

Why Intentional Plant Design Matters

This is one of the biggest differences I see between intentional plant design and simply “adding plants” to a space.

Randomly placing plants throughout a home without thought can actually create visual chaos and stress, both for the space and for the plants themselves. Thoughtful plant design creates flow, warmth, softness, and balance while allowing the plants to truly thrive.

Intentionality matters deeply to me in every aspect of my life.

I practice mindfulness daily, and I try to carry that same care and presence into my work. I’m intentional not only with the design itself, but also with the relationships I build with my clients and the ongoing care of their plants.

I treat my clients’ homes the way I treat my own.

Unfortunately, I’ve seen many companies simply “check a box.” They water the plants, leave, and move on to the next stop. That has never aligned with who I am or how I want my business to operate.

For me, this work is personal.

My Philosophy

I believe intentional plant design should bring joy, healing, and connection into a space.

I want my clients to feel grounded, inspired, and emotionally connected to their homes. I want them to feel confident caring for their plants instead of overwhelmed by them.

My goal with Lauren and Plants has never been to simply place plants in homes. My goal is to create spaces that feel more alive, calming, warm, and supportive for the people living in them.

Plants should support your life, not become another source of stress.

Final Thoughts

I hope this encourages people to see plants as more than just decor.

Plants have the power to ground us, inspire us, and completely transform the feeling of a space. Whether someone is going through a healing season, craving more warmth in their home, or simply wanting to feel more connected to nature, intentional plant design can make a meaningful impact.

Your home should feel like a place where you can fully exhale.

For me, that’s what Lauren and Plants is truly about. Creating spaces that feel alive, calming, and deeply intentional through thoughtful plant design and care.

Whether through interior plant design, maintenance, or hands-on workshops, my goal is always the same: to help people create homes that feel more connected, restorative, and full of life.
